Shred Guitar Speed Exercise: A Lesson On How To Break Through Speed Barriers
Looking for a shred guitar speed exercise to take your playing to a whole new level? You’ve found it!
So, what exactly prevents guitar players from getting faster?
Answer:
·
Inefficient technique
·
Hands out of sync
· Inconsistency
…just to name a few.
Fortunately, these things are not that hard to improve upon.
An excellent strategy for finding and improving your speed is to attack your (known and unknown) mistakes from all angles in rapid-fire succession.
This helps you quickly learn what to do to get faster and become a cleaner guitarist.
Use the following shred guitar exercise to get faster and cleaner speed in no time using this approach:
Step One: Choose 5 Guitar Licks You Want To Work On And Choose 5 Notes From
Each
Choose 5 guitar licks you want to improve.
Break each lick down into segments of a few notes a time to make them easier to process as you practice.
This way, you are able to fix mistakes on a few notes at a time without becoming overwhelmed adding in the rest of the lick.
Practice each lick using the remaining steps before moving onto the next.
This exercise should go by quickly so you are able to practice each lick in a single session:
Step Two: Double Pick The Notes Of The Lick
Pick every note you play twice rather than once.
This brings your hands together in sync helping you develop smooth and effortless speed.
Practice this step 3 times, then immediately move onto the next step.
Step Three: Pick With Heavy Articulation
Use heavy picking power to play every note. This means pick with tons of power! The following video shows you how to do it:Picking with power helps you articulate notes better, making them clearer and cleaner while forcing you to keep your hands in better sync.
Practice this step 3 times, then immediately move onto the next step.
Step Four: Practice With Speed Picking
Instead of picking normally, speed pick all the notes in the lick. This video shows you how to improve your speed picking:
Speed picking is another great way to make picking like normal feel easier. This is because you are essentially practicing “single” picking the note very rapidly, for many repetitions.
Practice this step 3 times, then immediately move onto the next step.
Step Five: Play Continuously With No Breaks In Between For 10 Repetitions
Using continuous repletion is like drilling your technique into your muscle memory.
This gives you the opportunity to develop incredible consistency in your playing so you make less mistakes in the future.
Track how many mistakes you make, correct them and see if you can add more repetitions over time to become an accuracy machine.
Pretty cool idea, huh?
Practice this step 3 times (30 total repetitions, a brief break in between every 10), then immediately move onto the next step.
Step Six: Play Like Normal With Short Breaks In Between
Now play the guitar lick like normal, while giving yourself a short break in between each repetition.
Practice this step 3 times, then immediately move onto the next step.
Takeaway:
After working through this exercise, you should quickly gain killer shred speed and better accuracy with the licks you chose to work on.
Since this drill doesn’t take too long, you can repeat it several times within a single practice session for big results!
