Exercise #1: Pick With Power To Slice Through Notes Like Butter

Fact:

Most guitar players pick with a very weak picking attack.

Don’t do this!

This leads to a weaker overall sound, unclear notes and sometimes sloppy mistakes.

Picking with a good amount of power makes notes sound more clear while also locking your hands together in sync for cleaner playing. This keeps your technique honest too, because picking with power reveals underlying mistakes that you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.

Observe the difference picking with power makes versus using a weaker pick attack by watching this video:

Exercise:

Choose any short guitar lick, then practice applying heavy picking power using the ideas below. Practice each one for 1 minute:

1.   Practice on clean settings to make it more noticeable when your hands are out of sync so you can fix it.

2.   Double pick the notes of the lick.

3.   Triple pick the notes of the lick.

4.   Use only upstrokes to pick the notes.

5.   Tremolo pick the notes of the lick.

This not only trains your picking power, but helps you clean up any guitar lick and make it feel easier to play by improving your synchronization between hands.

Exercise #2: Make It Easier To Improve Your Picking Speed By Breaking Things Down

Wish you had the ability to track every note you play during fast runs to play them perfectly?

Good news: Practicing notes in small groups helps keep track what you are doing to quickly and efficiently find your mistakes and better focus on every note you play.

This means your brain processes notes better and it becomes easier to pick with fast speed that feels smooth and effortless.

Exercise #3: Sweep Pick Smoother Than Ever 2 Strings At A Time

Every guitar player loves the sound of fast and clean sweep picking arpeggios!

Unfortunately, many players feel like this technique is either too hard or is only for “shredders.”

Wrong on both counts.

Sweep picking is actually easier to do than you think and can be applied into any musical style.

Here is how to get started mastering it:

Build a strong foundation for the technique by focusing on just a couple of strings at a time and expand from there to play larger arpeggio patterns. Sweep picking back and forth between just two strings strengthens the basic motion needed by laser-focusing on it.

This video demonstrates the concept:

Just take any sweep picking arpeggio pattern you know and isolate a couple strings within the pattern. Practice these apart from the other notes.

Then combine the rest of the pattern with the notes.

Applying the exercises in this article into your guitar playing seriously develops your right hand technique. Practice them just 10-15 minutes a day for one week and watch as you make tons of progress.
