Right Hand Guitar Speed Exercises For Killer Technique Like The Pros

Want to turn your right hand into a guitar speed machine with killer technique just like the pros?

Hell yes you do!

…And the good news is it’s not that hard (and pretty fun)!

Note: If your main picking hand is your left hand, then that is the hand to focus on here 😉

Getting killer right hand guitar technique like the pros requires practicing with exercises that focus on a few specific elements.

Let’s discuss them:

Exercise #1: Increase Your Picking Power To Make Notes More Clear

Picking with more power makes notes clearer and locks both hands together in sync for cleaner playing.

This keeps you from allowing your picking to become to relaxed so inconsistencies and mistakes can subtly occur under the radar.

See the major difference picking with power makes versus using a weaker pick attack here:

Choose any short guitar lick, then practice applying heavy picking power using these ideas:

1.   Practice playing on clean settings while using heavy picking in the right hand. This really brings out your mistakes to make them obvious (which is good!). Make this easier by repeating just a few notes at a time.

2.   Accent only one or two specific notes using heavy picking power to bring your mind’s focus to them. This makes them easier to fix and perfect. More on this in a moment.

Note: Make sure to keep your hands separate from each other.

Meaning: Focus on heavy picking power in the picking hand, but without using too much pressure to fret notes in the fretting hand.

Always fret notes with only as much pressure as is needed to get the note to sound.

Exercise #2: Pick Faster And More Precise By Aligning Your Brain With Your Hands

You might think it’s impossible to pick notes at super-fast speeds while tracking every note.

Reality: Breaking down the number of notes you play makes it easier to track what you are doing.

This means your brain processes fast notes more easily and it becomes easier to pick with fast and clean speed.

Exercise #3: Break Down Arpeggios A Couple Strings At A Time For Insane Speed

Sweep picking is one of the most coveted techniques for guitar players.

And for good reason.

It sounds awesome!

However, sweep picking is easier to do than you might think.

The key to mastering it, is to start small, build a strong foundation and expand from there.

Sweep picking back and forth between just two strings helps you develop a lightning-fast picking motion in your right hand while mastering rolling technique in your fretting hand.

This video demonstrates the concept:

Sweep picking two strings really quick to improve rolling and develop foundation for solid sweeping at higher levels.

Simply take any arpeggio pattern you have learned and isolate two strings of the pattern. Practice these separate from the other notes.

Then integrate everything together.

For larger arpeggio patterns, break down the entire pattern by isolating two strings at time and combining different sections of the arpeggio together until you can play the entire pattern seamlessly.

This approach is very effective because it helps you focus on just a few notes at a time as you get your hands in perfect sync with each other.

Applying the exercises on this page into your guitar playing helps you make serious progress with your right hand technique. Practice these things just 10-15 minutes a day to see massive progress in no time.
